Dover Athletic now make the journey to the Focus Community Arena for the 3pm fixture against the Tudors, read about our opponents here:
Dover Athletic were founded in 1983 due to the disbandment of Dover FC and therefore they continued in the Southern League. In the 1989-90 season they won the title of the Southern League but promotion to the Conference South was stopped in it's tracks due their ground not meeting the requirements for the league. The Whites managed to gain promotion after winning the league a few years later.
Dover spent almost a decade in the Conference South but were relegated after 9 years in the league. They were relegated into the Isthmian League after going through a few managers who couldn't get a tune out of the players. The season after relegation, Dover finished in third place but were unable to gain promotion. The season after the club had a turbulent season due to financial difficulties so they finished in 19th just avoiding relegation.
In the summer of 2004, The Whites moved to the Isthmian League Premier Division after a re-organisation of the English footballing pyramid. The following season saw Dover get relegated down to the Isthmian League Division One and were almost deemed extinct but were saved by their former director. He brought Clive Walker back in as manager and the club was on steady foundations for the first time in years. Andy Hessenthaler took charge at the beginning of the 2006-07 season where he managed back to back promotions, therefore taking the Whites back to the Conference South.
After a few losses in the play-offs in the previous years, 2014 was the year they won promotion to the National League for the first time for Dover Athletic. In the 2021-22 season Dover were handed a 12 point deduction due to their fixtures being removed the previous season caused by Covid-19. The point deduction caused the club to face relegation back to the Conference South after eight seasons in the National League.
In the current season, Dover find themselves bottom of the National League South and are already relegated with 4 games left of the season. Both teams go into this fixture on the back of a win as Dover win at home against high flying Chelmsford1-0 and the Tudors got a vital away win at the temporary ground of Truro 2-0.
