OPPOSITION FOCUS | Chesham United (H)

Back home for our penultimate home game and it's against the Generals! After a very wet reverse fixture on New Years Day, the Tudors will be looking for redemption on a familiar playing surface and Chesham will be looking for a win to continue their run of good form.

Let's learn a little more about Chesham United.

The Key Info

Founded: 1917

Nickname: The Generals

Managers: James Duncan, Michael Murray

Stadium: The Meadow

Capacity: 5000

The History:

Founded in 1917 following the merger of Chesham Town and Chesham Generals, Chesham United are a club who have worked their way through the non-league system, originally

joining the Corinthian League. After finishing runners up in that division in 1961, the

Corinthian League was eventually disbanded, which meant that the Generals found

themselves in the Isthmian League system.

Despite their first feeling of relegation, the period between 1986 and 1993 saw an extremely impressive achievement from Chesham United, working their way up from the Isthmian League Division Two North all the way to Isthmian League Premier Division Champions. In recent years, the Generals have been unlucky to miss out on promotion on numerous occasions, with three successive playoff defeats between 2011 and 2014.

There have been key clashes between the Tudors and the Generals, with Hemel securing promotion to the National League South after a 2-1 victory in the 2013/14 season. This season saw the Generals attract the BBC cameras to cover their FA Cup tie against League One outfit Lincoln City, which saw the Generals exit with a 0-4 defeat in front of a sold out stadium.

The Managers: James Duncan and Michael Murray

Chesham United are unique in the fact that they operate with joint-managers, as both James

Duncan and Michael Murray are in charge of the Generals. Since their appointment in

October 2018, the pair have led Chesham in an upward trajectory into the National League

South. With the Generals sitting bottom of the third tier during their appointment, both Murray

and Duncan were able to improve the side and guide them to a promotion in last season’s

campaign. This year has seen the Generals maintain their status in the National League

South for next season.

Star Man: Mitchell Weiss

Mitchell Weiss is a name which may sound familiar to the Tudors faithful, having previously

represented the club. Joining the Tudors from Kings Langley, Weiss’ experience as a Hemel

Hempstead Town player came in the form of numerous loan spells to both Kings Langley

and Hayes & Yeading to develop his experience within non-league football. After his loan spell at Hayes & Yeading, Weiss eventually made the permanent switch back to Kings Langley, before a move to St Albans came in the 2020/21 season. He became a fans favourite at the Saints, most notably scoring a decisive goal in front of the TV Camera in the FA Cup triumph over Forest Green Rovers.

Since joining the Generals, Weiss has showcased both his goalscoring and playmaking

attributes, netting in their most recent victory over Farnborough and achieving many

important contributions along the way.

The Skipper: Steve Brown

Joining the Generals at the same time as both Duncan and Murray, Steve Brown has proved to display the attributes of a worthy captain throughout his time as a Chesham United player.

Playing as a centre back, Brown joined Chesham from Potters Bar Town after spending the majority of his career in the lower steps of the non-league pyramid. Brown has learned and adapted to the physicality that is required for this level and has developed a wealth of

experience, which will benefit the Generals. This season has seen Brown make 16 appearances, scoring just one goal in a 3-1 victory over Chippenham in what has been

remarkable season for the Generals.

Last Time Out: Chesham 1-0 Hemel

The last clash between Chesham United and the Tudors came on New Years Day at The Meadow, in what were extremely tough conditions to play in. The game proved hard for the Tudors to adapt their free-flowing style of football, which worked in the host’s favour, as Joe Grant opened the scoring just before the half time mark. The game was going to be key for battles to be won and whilst the Tudors pushed for an equaliser throughout the Second Half, the Generals held firm to gain a 1-0 victory.
