Aveley 0 Hemel Hempstead Town 1
Vanarama National League South fixture 19th August 2024
After a dominant performance against Weymouth just two days earlier The Tudors helped themselves to another 3 away points at Aveley, a side who were beaten in the playoffs last season.
It was a superb first half performance from Hemel and as with the previous game, it was the only home sides goalkeeper who kept the scores down.
He saved superbly with his legs when Ricardo German found himself in space just outside the six yard box. Just moments later he thwarted Chris Smith who drove in a powerful shot from, the edge of the box.
The visitors broke the deadlock with what would prove to be the winning goal after 21 minutes when they took a quick throw in down the left, Teddy Howe’s pace took him past the defender and he raced towards the six yard box before squaring the ball to German who made no mistake from close range,

German was unlucky when he tried his luck from range after Aveley’s keeper had headed clear after a quick counter attack had caught his defence out, the Tudors striker instinctively chipped the ball towards the empty goal from 30 yards out but it just cleared the bar.
The nearest Aveley came to an equaliser came just before the interval when a freekick from the edge of the box almost caught Craig King out but he was able to get across and tip the ball over the bar
The second half was a much more even affair although Ben Tompkins had a great chance to double the lead after a superb interchange between Iaciofano and Cerulli put him in behind the Aveley back line but his first touch was just too heavy and the keeper was able to snatch the ball away.
Iaciofano saw a superb curling effort tipped round the post by the keeper when it looked odds on to find the bottom corner and there was a late scare for Hemel when ex Tudor Charlee Hughes found some space inside the box but his effort was well blocked by Kyle Ajayi.
There were two late sendings off for Aveley in the dying minutes as they got more and more frustrated by the superb efforts of the Hemel back line and with no further scares the visitors held on for another three points which took them, if only for one day, to the top of the table.
Farnborough winning their Tuesday night game meant they went top but The Tudors remain in second place after a very promising start to the season.
