No tricks, only treats as Slabber fires Tudors to thumping win at Gosport

Match report by Ellie Harries

Hemel Town bounced back to winning ways in emphatic style as they thrashed Gosport Borough 6-2 in a National League South Halloween massacre.

Jamie Slabber took the plaudits for Hemel as he helped himself to a hat-trick, but in truth it was a fine all-round display from the rampant Tudors.

Rowan Vine had a good early opportunity for Borough as his clever piece of skill took him past two defenders, but his shot hit the side-netting.

But Hemel showed attacking intent themselves soon afterwards and took control as Borough keeper Nathan Ashmore’s poor kick allowed Hemel to take the lead with a spectacular long-range strike.

Ashmore came out of his goal to deal with a back-pass, but his clearance found Matt Spring, who cracked the ball back into the open net from near the halfway line.

Borough almost responded immediately as Vine’s attempt to lob Tudors goalkeeper Jamie Butler narrowly missed the target.

Hemel could have doubled their lead when Oliver Hawkins rattled the crossbar with a header that came back down on the goal-line, and Ashmore then pulled off a fine save to deny Dennis Oli, with Borough’s defence looking shaky.

The Tudors were not to be denied, though, and they soon ran riot to race into a 4-0 half-time lead.

Noor Husin was on hand to poke home the second, after a scramble in the box just past the half-hour mark.

And ex-Hawks striker Slabber then struck a quick-fire double to put Hemel in total command.

Both times the Borough defence failed to deal with crosses into the box and on both occasions, Slabber was on hand to add the finishing touch.

Borough pulled one back early in the second half to give themselves a glimmer of hope when Vine converted Mike Carter’s cross from the left wing.

And Borough looked like they might stage a remarkable recovery when Lee Wort made it 4-2 after finding the net following some great work from George Barker and Tom Dunford’s shot.

But those hopes looked over on 72 minutes when Ashmore felled Oli in the box and Slabber converted from the spot to complete his hat-trick.

Hemel then rubbed salt into the wounds with a sixth goal in stoppage time as Husin netted his second of the game.

A comedy of errors at the back saw Elliott Wheeler and Ryan Woodford collide to allow the Hemel man a clear run at goal.

That left Hemel to celebrate an emphatic away win, as Dean Brennan’s side maintained their unbeaten league record on the road this season.
